Build Story

As a retro computer enthusiast, I’m always scouring platforms like Facebook Marketplace for hidden gems from the late ‘90s and early 2000s. When I stumbled across a local listing for a Gateway 500SE, complete with tower, mouse, keyboard, and flat panel display for $150-$199, I knew I had to jump on it. The beige tower, rocking an Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz and NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, screamed early 2000s nostalgia—a perfect candidate for my CollierComputers.com inventory.

The deal was too good to pass up, but the mechanical hard drive gave me pause. I’ve never been a fan of their sluggish performance and reliability issues, so I decided to modernize this rig with a 120GB SSD. On July 31, 2024, I got to work: I swapped out the old HDD, installed the SSD with a custom mounting bracket, and upgraded the power supply to a beefy 500W unit for stability. While I was at it, I added a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 for that authentic, immersive retro gaming sound. I also gave the system some TLC—replaced the CMOS battery, reapplied CPU thermal paste, cleaned and oiled the CPU fan, and scrubbed the case to make it shine.

With Windows XP freshly installed and a curated selection of classic games loaded, this Gateway 500SE transformed into a retro gaming beast. It’s now a star of my collection, showcased on CollierComputers.com, ready to thrill any vintage PC fan. This build wasn’t just about reviving a machine—it was about preserving a piece of computing history with a modern twist.
